HOW DOES A FRANKING MACHINE WORK?
In the UK (including London) all franking machines need to be licenced by the Royal Mail. In addition the physical franking machine features above to use a franking machine you will need a Royal Mail franking licence and Postage account.
Funds can be paid into the postage account using Direct Debit, Credit card, Debit card, Bacs or cheque and these funds are access through the franking machine.
Using the integrated scale you weigh your item and choose the service you require such as First or Second Class using the touchscreen. Once done run your envelope through the franking machine and it will print the following mark onto your item in blue ink.
This barcode is Royal Mail’s new Mailmark and allows for their sorting machines to read the information printed as it travels through the postal systems. The franking machine barcode replaces the traditional franking indicia but still includes the town where the item was posted (e.g. London) the outbound Postcode (WC1) and the date and time the item was franked.
